WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman David G. Valadao (CA-22) released the following statement after voting in support of a 45-day Continuing Resolution (CR) to keep the government open while the House and Senate continue their work on Appropriations Bills. The CR included a supplemental appropriation of $16 billion for the Federal Emergency Management Agency Disaster Relief Fund, which was expected to run out of funding. The Continuing Resolution passed with widespread bipartisan support.
“Like many of you, I’m frustrated by the political brinksmanship that pushed us right up against the deadline to fund the government,” said Congressman Valadao. “Compromise is necessary to get anything done in a divided government, and from the beginning I have stressed the need to work across the aisle to pass something that could get support in a Republican-controlled House and a Democratic-controlled Senate. Today I voted in support of a bipartisan, short-term Continuing Resolution to keep the government open while we continue our work to pass fiscally responsible government funding bills. I will continue working to rein in wasteful Washington spending so we do not burden our future generations with trillions of dollars in debt.”
Congressman Valadao spoke on the House Floor in support of keeping the government open and passing appropriations bills through regular order. Watch his remarks here.
Background:
The House and the Senate each must pass 12 appropriations bills before September 30th or a Continuing Resolution (CR) to buy more time to find agreement between the House, Senate, and White House on various funding levels in order to keep the government open. The House Appropriations Committee has marked up 10 of the 12 appropriations bills in Committee, and passed four off the House Floor. The Senate has passed none of its 12 appropriations bills. Congress now has until November 17, 2023 to find agreement on full-year appropriations bills for Fiscal Year 2024. The Continuing Appropriations Act of 2024:
- Funds the government through November 17, 2023.
- Provides $16 billion in supplemental funding for disaster relief.
- Includes temporary extensions for the Federal Aviation Administration through December 31, 2023.
- Extends the authorization and borrowing authority of the National Flood Insurance Program through November 17, 2023.
