WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman David G. Valadao (CA-22) led members of the California congressional delegation in a letter to the Governor regarding his recent proposed mandate from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) that half of all heavy vehicles (trucks and tractors) sold in California be electric by 2035. The letter was first reported by Fox News.
“Governor Newsom is once again putting the interests of extreme environmentalists over hardworking Californians,” said Congressman Valadao. “This misguided mandate will make trucking shortages worse, amplify supply chain problems, and further stress California’s electrical grid.”
In the letter, the members stress the devastating consequences this would have on the supply chain, the electrical grid, and the economy
“In September 2022, California’s electric grid was stressed, and consumers were asked to reduce energy use to avoid rolling blackouts […] While the grid was able to sustain this use thanks to conservation efforts from residents, the demand for energy would have been much greater had thousands of heavy trucks been reliant on power from the state’s grid,” the members wrote.
Congressman Valadao was joined in the letter by Reps. John Duarte (CA-13), Kevin Kiley (CA-03), Young Kim (CA-40), Doug LaMalfa (CA-01), Tom McClintock (CA-05), Jay Obernolte (CA-23), and Michelle Steel (CA-45)
