WASHINGTON - This evening, U.S. Congressman David G. Valadao (CA-21) attended President Donald Trump's first State of the Union address to Congress. Following the address, he issued the following statement:

"Each and every topic mentioned by the President tonight has major ramifications on the Central Valley. And while our nation faces many challenges, I am hopeful we can do what's best for the American people and conquer those challenges together.

Since coming to Congress in 2013, one thing has been clear - the Valley is hurting. Too many of my constituents - young parents, seniors, veterans, and recent college graduates - remain out of work, despite their best efforts.

My top priority in Congress is to support policies that encourage businesses and create jobs. Just last month we passed the biggest reforms to our tax code in over thirty years. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is the first step to putting our nation back on track and providing Americans with the resources they need to be successful.

As our economy has become increasingly complex, the role of international trade has increased. For this reason, it is important that our trade policies and agreements boost American exports to benefit American workers, farmers, and job creators - especially those here in California.

Without sufficient transportation infrastructure, Central Valley farmers would be unable to ship their goods throughout the world. Our nation's transportation infrastructure plays an integral role in the United States' economic growth as it facilitates the safe movement of people and goods from place to place, making it incredibly critical we repair our nation's aging roads, bridges, and tunnels.

Here in the Central Valley, hard work and innovation define our way of life. Many of those hard workers are immigrants. In California alone, the immigrant population makes up nearly one third of our state's economy. Not only do they make economic contributions but they are leaders in society and an integral part of our communities. Ensuring immigrants have a pathway to citizenship remains one of my very top priorities.

Regardless of economic growth and prosperity, without a strong national defense, our nation would not endure. Like the President, I believe it is critical our troops have the resources, training, and tools needed to complete their mission. Without their sacrifice and bravery, Americans would not enjoy the freedoms we do today.

I came to Washington to get something done, to achieve real results, and I will work with both sides of the aisle to achieve this. I look forward to working with the President and other Members of Congress to improve our economy and move our country forward."

Congressman David G. Valadao represents the 21st Congressional District, which includes Kings County and portions of Fresno, Tulare, and Kern Counties.
