SAN DIEGO - This morning, United States Congressman David G. Valadao (CA0-21) joined the U.S. Coast Guard as the agency turned over more than 47,000 pounds of cocaine worth over $721 million in San Diego.

The narcotics, which were seized in twenty-three separate interdictions in the eastern Pacific Ocean by United States and Canadian forces, will be turned over to federal agents for investigation, prosecution and, destruction by federal agents.

At the offload site, U.S. and Canadian officials highlighted the importance of international cooperation in combating the threat posed by organized crime groups.

Congressman Valadao stated, "Border security is fundamental to our national security and it is absolutely imperative we know who, and what, is coming across our border. Not only is it essential in keeping known criminals and suspected terrorists from entering the United States, it is vital to preventing unlawful drugs and illegal weapons from ending up in our communities." He continued, "Ensuring those who protect us from these threats, like the men and women of our United States Coast Guard, have the funding and resources to properly do their job is absolutely necessary."

Following the offload, Congressman Valadao returned to U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Diego (SSD) for important briefings and a tour of the Joint Interagency Operations Center. In addition, Congressman Valadao participated in an MH-60 familiarization flight of the Coast Guard's area of responsibility and accompanied Station San Diego on a Response Boat to witness first-hand how the Coast Guard secures U.S. coastal maritime borders.

Congressman David G. Valadao represents the 21st Congressional District, which includes Kings County and portions of Fresno, Tulare, and Kern Counties.
