Congressman David G. Valadao (CA-21) delivered this statement following a recent attack on an elderly man outside a Sikh Gurdwara on Sunday:
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the recent attack on Piara Singh outside the Southwest Fresno temple, Gurdwara Nanaksar on Sunday morning.
“According to his family and officials, Mr. Singh was attacked as he left the temple where he volunteers on a daily basis. Local investigators have a suspect in custody and continue to investigate this attack. At this time, no motive has been determined.
“Heartbreaking events such as this, highlight deep societal problems, specifically what I believe is a general disregard for human life that has unfortunately become prevalent in our society.
“The Central Valley is home to more than 25,000 Sikhs. They play a very important role in our communities. I am co-founder and co-chair of the Congressional Sikh Caucus, a group of Members focused on representing Sikhs and the many unique challenges they face. I am proud to represent a community that plays such a significant role in my district.
“My prayers go out to Mr. Singh and his family as he undergoes treatment. I wish him a full and quick recovery.”
Congressman David G. Valadao represents the 21st Congressional District, which includes Kings County and portions of Fresno, Tulare, and Kern counties.
