Our question this week comes from Norma in Bakersfield. She asks:
“My question is: how can we stop the unprecedented and lengthy delays to finally get a good VA clinic in Bakersfield that was authorized in 2010 in Congress? Of the facilities that were authorized, Bakersfield is the ONLY one that hasn’t been built.”
Thank you for your question, Norma. I am also incredibly frustrated with how long and difficult this whole process has been. Caring for our nation’s veterans is a top priority of mine, and Bakersfield veterans not being able to receive the care they need is unacceptable.
This new clinic has been plagued with endless delays, and our veterans do not have another decade to wait around for modernized facilities. Currently, the new VA clinic project is being held up by lawsuits challenging the project.
I have worked closely with the Department of Veterans Affairs both at public congressional hearings and in private meetings to get answers about what they’re doing to resolve this issue and when we can expect our veterans in the Valley to be able to receive care. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I’ve also submitted language in our annual spending bills that directs the VA to regularly update Congress on the status of the clinic.
Unfortunately, neither Congress nor the VA can control the courts, and the status of the endless litigation intended to delay this project. I will continue to track the progress of this facility and work with local leaders to do everything I can at the federal level to advocate for the completion of this project. Our veterans fought for our nation, and I will continue fighting to get them the care they need and deserve.
