Our question this week comes from Ginger in Bakersfield. She asks:
"Is there a way to help the homeless in California?"
Thanks for your question, Ginger. Unfortunately, the homelessness situation has become increasingly serious in California. Homelessness doesn’t affect just the big cities in the state – it’s having an impact right in our own backyard in rural communities throughout the Central Valley. I’m committed to finding solutions that reduce the number of people living on the streets.
I’m a co-sponsor of the Safe Parking Act, which would make federal funding available to local Safe Parking Programs, which provide homeless individuals living in their vehicles with a safe place to park their cars overnight and offer resources to assist with the transition to more stable housing. I was also able to secure $9 million in federal funding for a new homeless shelter campus in Bakersfield earlier this year through Community Project Funding in the Fiscal Year 2024 Appropriations bill. While there’s no single solution to this complex issue, I'll continue working with our cities and local organizations to find ways to get folks off the streets and into more stable housing.
