WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Congressman David G. Valadao (CA-21) returns to the United States from a Congressional Delegation (CODEL) to East Asia conducted by the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, on which Congressman Valadao serves.

On Monday, Congressman Valadao joined Subcommittee Chairman Charles Dent (R-PA) on a bipartisan delegation to visit several military installations throughout East Asia. The delegation included oversight visits to Japan and the Republic of Korea where the Members were provided briefings on U.S. Forces Korea (USFK), U.S. Forces Japan (USFJ), and U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM) MILCON priorities and projects.

Congressman Valadao stated, “It is critical for the Appropriations Subcommittee to provide first hand oversight of the military construction projects and priorities the committee funds." He continued, "The trip could not have come at a more pivotal time, as tensions continue to increase on the Korean Peninsula. It is more important than ever for the United States to stand with our allies to deter aggression from the North Korean regime."

The trip comes at a time when tensions on the Korean Peninsula continue to mount with North Korea’s ongoing development of its nuclear program. In response, President Trump has dispatched the USS Carl Vinson carrier strike group to the region where it will conduct joint military drills with both Japanese and Korean forces. These exercises are important to demonstrate the United States commitment to the protection of its allies in the region in the face of the growing threat posed by North Korea.

During his visit, Rep. Valadao met with South Korean officials to discuss the concerning reports coming out of North Korea and the ongoing relocation of U.S. troops stationed in Seoul near the border with the north and the demilitarized zone, to Camp Humphreys further south on the peninsula. The visit highlighted the alliance between the United States, South Korea, and Japan as well as the current military construction projects under way in the region.

Congressman Valadao was able to meet with troops and discuss quality of life issues abroad. Valadao was especially honored to meet Marine Corps Corporal Ethan A. Martinez, a Hanford resident currently stationed at Camp Kinser in Okinaway, Japan.
