WASHINGTON - Today, Thursday, September 15, 2016, the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform held a markup on legislation introduced by U.S. Congressman David G. Valadao (CA-21) to protect Americans, especially veterans, children, and seniors, from identity theft and fraud.

H.R. 3779; the Social Security Fraud Prevention Act, which aims to lower the occurrence of identity theft by reducing the prevalence of printed Social Security Numbers on government-issued documents, was passed by the House Committee on Oversight and Government with unanimous consent and may now be placed on the legislative calendar for consideration in the House.

Congressman Valadao stated, "By reducing the number of mailed documents that contain full Social Security numbers, Congress can lessen the occurrence and mitigate the impacts of identity theft. My bill is helps prevent government carelessness from threatening the financial security of millions of Americans." He continued, "I appreciate the Committee's consideration and I look forward to working with leadership to ensure this commonsense bill comes before the House for a vote."

H.R. 3779, the Social Security Fraud Prevention Act of 2015 was introduced by Congressman David G. Valadao on October 21, 2015 and aims to address concerns regarding the prevalence of Social Security Numbers on government-issued documents. Specifically, the legislation aims to specify the circumstances under which inclusion of full SSNs is necessary and otherwise partially redact or completely remove the SSN from government-issued documents.
