Recognizing the Contributions of Portuguese Communities Worldwide

The Central Valley is home to a strong Portuguese American community whose values, traditions, and work ethic have helped shape our region for generations. That's why, as a proud Portuguese American and co-chair of the Congressional Portuguese Caucus, I'm honored to join Congressman Jim Costa to introduce a resolution officially recognizing June 10th as Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities. This resolution honors the life and legacy of Luís de Camões, Portugal's most celebrated poet and author of Os Lusíadas—a literary work that helped define Portuguese national identity. As we honor Luís de Camões, we also celebrate the countless contributions Portuguese communities continue to make in the Central Valley and across the nation.

Supporting Early Childhood Development for Agricultural Families

I had a great meeting with the Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo to discuss the importance of its Migrant and Seasonal Head Start program, which provides free early childhood education, health services, and family support to the children of agricultural workers in Delano, Lamont, Arvin, and Wasco.

Head Start plays a vital role in preparing children for lifelong success by giving them a strong foundation during their earliest years. I look forward to continuing our partnership to ensure Central Valley families have access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.

Meeting with Valley Dairy Farmers

Earlier this week, I met with Central Valley representatives from the National Milk Producers Federation to discuss dairy production in the Central Valley. We spoke about the benefits of nutritious dairy products in schools and the importance of proper labeling on imitation dairy products. As the sole dairyman in Congress, these are topics I understand firsthand, and I look forward to continuing to my work to support our dairy farmers in Congress.

Discussing Nutrition Programs with the International Fresh Produce Association

On Wednesday, I had a great discussion with local representatives from the International Fresh Produce Association about the importance of supporting our nation’s producers. We talked about USDA crop purchasing programs, which provide a critical market for Central Valley farmers while helping deliver fresh, nutritious produce to families in need through federal nutrition programs. I appreciate IFPA’s work on behalf of the more than 2.2 million agricultural jobs, family farms, and produce growers they represent, and I look forward to continuing these important conversations.

Team Valadao in the Valley

This week, Team Valadao met with Tulare County Agricultural Commissioner Christopher Greer to discuss the responsibilities of his office and the work being done to support communities across the district. The team also met with Tulare Fire Chief Ott for a tour of the firehouse and received updates on local public safety priorities. My staff also met with the City of Tulare Public Works Director Trisha Whitfield to discuss funding opportunities and ways my office can assist with community projects. Later, the team attended the Mid-Kings River Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA) meeting to receive an update on their subbasin plan before touring the Kings County Superior Court to learn more about court operations and services provided to residents.

Later in the week, my staff attended the CAPK Foundation’s 3rd Annual Gourmet for Good Event, the Lamont Park groundbreaking ceremony, and the grand opening of the Nestlé Arvin Distribution Center. The team also met with Arvin City Manager Jeff Jones, Arvin Community Services District General Manager Raul Barraza, and Golden Empire Transit District CEO Chris James to discuss local priorities and opportunities to support the community. They also attended the grand opening of Bentley Bowl’s new kitchen and the Yelp Block Party celebrating downtown Bakersfield businesses, where they presented Certificates of Recognition.

The team later attended the Tulare County Association of Realtors’ legislative update on solar panel ownership and housing shortages. They also met with representatives from City of Hope to discuss their work in the district, including research and treatment efforts focused on cancer and diabetes. At Central California Legal Services’ 60th Anniversary Celebration, my staff presented a Certificate of Recognition honoring their service to the community. To close out the week, the team attended the Tulare Rotary Flagpole Dedication and presented another Certificate of Recognition.
