Celebrating Veterans Day Around the Valley

On Monday we celebrated Veterans Day, honoring the service and sacrifice of countless men and women to secure the freedoms we enjoy. While I was in Washington, D.C., members of Team Valadao attended events across the Valley on Monday to celebrate our local veterans.

A ceremony was held at the Bakersfield National Cemetery in Arvin to honor unaccompanied veterans, who were laid to rest without family present in Kern County. This event paid tribute to their sacrifice and a reminder that they will never be forgotten.

Members of my staff were proud to join the Veterans Breakfast held at the American Legion Post 26 in Bakersfield. They helped out serving meals and supporting the local community.

Tulare County hosted a special Veterans Day program on Monday where local veterans Chris Porter and John Lee were honored for their service. They received certificates from my office in recognition of their service for our country.

Finally, Team Valadao attended a ceremony at Camp Hamilton Veterans Memorial Park in Shafter.

It was inspiring to see so many great events across the Valley honoring our veterans. We owe them a huge debt of gratitude and should always recognize their service and sacrifice.

Recognizing Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Awareness Day

November 12th was Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Awareness Day, as designated by a bi-partisan resolution I introduced last month. Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) is a rare brain disease that causes a rapid decline in cognitive health. Unfortunately, most patients die within a year of symptom onset. My friend and longtime Bakersfield Mayor, Harvey Hall, passed away from CJD in 2018. I'm proud to help bring awareness to this disease and to honor the life of Mayor Hall. You can watch my remarks about my resolution below.

Supporting Public Service Workers

This week the House passed the Social Security Fairness Act, H.R. 82, with my support. Under current law, public service employees such as firefighters, teachers, and police officers receive reduced Social Security benefits due to the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO), despite paying into the system. H.R. 82 would eliminate the WEP and GPO, providing retired public servants with the full benefits they’ve earned. This bill now heads to the Senate for consideration. I’ll continue working across the aisle to bring solutions for hardworking Americans.
