Our question this week comes from Javier. He asks:
"What do you think should be done about immigration in our country?"
Thanks for your question, Javier. As the son of immigrants myself, I recognize the important role immigration plays in shaping our nation and the incredible opportunity it offers to those seeking to build a better life here. Unfortunately, our current system is broken and years of mismanagement has led to a crisis at our borders, but I believe this moment presents a real opportunity to address this issue head-on.
I think we can all agree known criminals must be removed from the United States. But as Congress works towards reform, we must keep in mind the hardworking people who are contributing to our economy. As you know, here in the Central Valley, we rely on a dependable workforce to help sustain our agricultural industry. I believe creating a pathway to earned legal status for hardworking individuals contributing to our economy is of the utmost importance, and I have long been supportive of comprehensive, common sense immigration reform.
In the 118th Congress, I re-introduced the Farm Workforce Modernization Act, which reforms the H-2A Temporary Agricultural Worker program by providing visas for industries with year-round labor needs. This would help solve agricultural labor shortages while improving incentives for continued agricultural employment in the United States. Even though this bill has not been signed into law yet—despite bipartisan support—I remain committed to working towards a solution.
