Avoiding Default and Reducing Government Spending

I know many Valley families have been concerned about the debt limit, and the uncertainty surrounding the whole situation. This week, the House of Representatives passed the Fiscal Responsibility Act – a deal negotiated between Speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Joe Biden to raise the debt limit and reduce Washington spending – with an overwhelming bipartisan vote.

Central Valley families adjust their budgets if they overspend – Washington should do the same. I voted for the Fiscal Responsibility Act because it avoids a catastrophic default on our debt while limiting government spending, cutting red tape, and holding the executive branch accountable for its spending. Importantly, this bill ensures full funding for our veterans’ programs and national security while protecting Social Security and Medicare.

Celebrating National Dairy Month

June is National Dairy Month and I want to take a moment to thank all the dairy farmers across California’s 22nd district for all they do to supply our nation with the dairy products we all know and love. California is the nation’s top producer of milk, housing more than 1,100 dairy farms and over 1.7 million cows across the state.

As a dairy farmer, I think it’s safe to say that happy cows come from California. This month, I ask you to join me in raising a glass of milk to all the dairy farmers across the Central Valley.

Building Bipartisan Relationships

Throughout my time in Congress, I have always worked to build relationships across the aisle in order to get things done for the Central Valley. That’s why last week, I joined Congresswoman Susie Lee (D-NV) on a Bipartisan Congressional Exchange Visit to her Nevada district.

During our trip, Rep. Lee and I visited Lake Mead to learn more about water usage from the Colorado River, toured the largest rare earth minerals mining site in the U.S., and met with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to see how they’re using technology to prevent targeted violence.

It's important that Republicans and Democrats continue to learn from each other about the issues affecting their constituents, and work to find common ground. I want to thank Rep. Susie Lee for a productive and educational visit to NV-03.

Ask David

Our question this week comes from Paula in Wasco. She asked:

"I'm concerned that once all the snow melts, we're going to see even worse flooding than we saw earlier this year. What can we do or what is being done to be better prepared for this time?"

Thank you for your question, Paula. The storms and subsequent flooding earlier this year had a tremendous impact on families, farms, and communities all across the Central Valley. While many people are still recovering from the damage, it is important that we stay prepared for the potential of even more flooding this summer.

My team and I have been in constant contact with our federal, state, and local partners to assist with the response to the flooding and ensure we are doing all we can to be better prepared for the next time. It is important for everyone who could be impacted in the Valley to develop a flood preparedness plan for themselves and their loved ones. This should include things like signing up for weather alerts, moving to higher ground when flood warnings are issued, and following any evacuation orders issued by local, state, or federal authorities. For more information about building your flood preparedness plan, click here.

I have been using my newsletter to periodically send flood updates and additional resources for families, farmers, and small business owners so make sure to check back each week for additional information. You can also find a list of available resources by visiting my website. Finally, If you were impacted by the floods and are having trouble receiving disaster assistance from a federal agency, call my office at (559) 460-6070 - we may be able to help.
