Our question this week comes from Paula in Wasco. She asked:
"I'm concerned that once all the snow melts, we're going to see even worse flooding than we saw earlier this year. What can we do or what is being done to be better prepared for this time?"
Thank you for your question, Paula. The storms and subsequent flooding earlier this year had a tremendous impact on families, farms, and communities all across the Central Valley. While many people are still recovering from the damage, it is important that we stay prepared for the potential of even more flooding this summer.
My team and I have been in constant contact with our federal, state, and local partners to assist with the response to the flooding and ensure we are doing all we can to be better prepared for the next time. It is important for everyone who could be impacted in the Valley to develop a flood preparedness plan for themselves and their loved ones. This should include things like signing up for weather alerts, moving to higher ground when flood warnings are issued, and following any evacuation orders issued by local, state, or federal authorities. I have been using my newsletter to periodically send flood updates and additional resources for families, farmers, and small business owners so make sure to check back each week for additional information. You can also find a list of available resources by visiting my website. Finally, If you were impacted by the floods and are having trouble receiving disaster assistance from a federal agency, call my office at (559) 460-6070 - we may be able to help.
