WASHINGTON - U.S. Congressman David G. Valadao (CA-21) announced that counties within California’s Twenty First Congressional District will receive over $9 million through the federal Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) program for fiscal year 2017.

PILT are Federal payments to local governments that help offset losses in property taxes due to non-taxable Federal lands within their boundaries. Fresno, Kings, Kern, and Tulare Counties, which make up the Twenty First Congressional District, will receive $9,075,096 in funding for fiscal year 2017, an increase of more than $175,000 from fiscal year 2016.

2017 PILT Funding Awards to CA21 Counties
  • Fresno County: $2,938,518.00
  • Kings County: $22,473.00
  • Kern County: $2,784,405.00
  • Tulare County: $3,329,700.00
In total, 58 local governments throughout California will receive a total of $48.3 million in Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) funding for 2017. The payments are California’s share of the record $464.6 million distributed to 1,900 local governments around the country this year.

Following the announcement from the United States Department of the Interior, Congressman David G. Valadao, who, as a member of the House Appropriations Committee, advocates on behalf of the PILT Program stated, “Ensuring the communities I represent receive federal funding to help offset property tax loss due to Federal lands within their boundaries is incredibly important.” He continued, “While federal lands provide recreation, conservation, military force, and energy production, they leave some counties at a financial disadvantage. However, the PILT program will allow our small rural communities to continue providing the important services our residents rely on like education, waste disposal, and law enforcement – just to name a few.”

More information on the PILT program may be found here.

Congressman David G. Valadao represents the 21st Congressional District of California, which includes Kings County and portions of Fresno, Tulare, and Kern Counties.
