HANFORD — U.S. Congressman David G. Valadao (CA-21) announced the availability of emergency loans for farm operators in Kern, Kings, and Tulare Counties.

Throughout 2016, severe weather conditions significantly impacted agriculture operations throughout California, causing massive crop damage and loss. After reviewing Loss Assessment Reports, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated five California Counties as primary natural disaster areas and an additional 23 counties as contiguous disaster counties. Included in the designation are Kern, Kings, and Tulare Counties located within Congressman Valadao’s Congressional District. As a result of the disaster declaration, farm operators located within these counties may be eligible to receive assistance through USDA, including emergency loans.

Provided through the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA), federal emergency loans are made available to help producers recover from production and physical losses due to extreme weather conditions such as drought and flooding. Emergency loan funds may be used to restore or replace essential property, reorganize farming operations, pay essential family living expenses, refinance certain debts, and pay all or part of production costs associated with the disaster year.

Congressman Valadao stated, “Agriculture is critical to our state’s economy and vital to our nation’s food supply. I am grateful the United States Department of Agriculture has made these emergency loans available, recognizing the serious damage and loss farmers have suffered.” He continued, “These loans will not only help our agriculture industry as a whole, but will also help those whose livelihoods have been impacted.”

Farm operators interested in applying must do so by October 2017. More information about farm loan programs can be found here on the USDA’s website or by contacting the Farm Service Agency Office in your county.
